When I became a parent for the first time, it was nothing less than everything I had ever wanted. But it was also so much more than I wanted including being completely overwhelmed, scared and unprepared for reality! I was under the presumption that I would nestle back into the warmth of my baby with my partner cradled in beside me, and we would be in perfect parent heaven. When my aunt called a few days after my son’s birth to wish me “congratulations”, she asked me, “isn’t it fun?” I wanted to just sob while standing there in my maternity underwear and nursing bra with my robe wide open and yell, “No it isn’t!” Instead I lied. If I was struggling this much, did it mean I wasn’t a good mom?
I had spent the months leading up to my son’s birth preparing for him with baby showers, a nursery, new gadgets and things. But what had I done to prepare myself? We had celebrated him, but what about our transition to parenthood? In the midst of my insecurities after his birth, what I really needed was someone to remind me each step of the way that I was doing alright and that I could do it.
When Lorri Fleming and I founded THE WOMB: THE WORLD OF MY BABY we imagined the moms and babies and families that would filter through “our centre” and we wanted to share the love and acceptance and real life experiences that we have accumulated in our 8+ years together as doulas and mentors.
To our core we believe that becoming pregnant, being pregnant and becoming a parent are sacred – each with its own rite of passage. Each needs to be celebrated as a step in a lifelong journey. These transitions are hard work, and often come with great rewards, but they can also be scary and overwhelming. We want every woman to know that no matter what is going on with her and her family that day, no matter how she is feeling, she has a place she can come to – to cry, to laugh, to find community, self acceptance and self love.
Taking our own advice, we are going to be celebrating our own transition, our own rite of passage by welcoming you into our home and hearts – into THE WOMB – a sacred place of origination, love, comfort and wellbeing.
Welcome to you – the communities of Milton, Oakville, Halton, Peel, past clients, current clients and surrounding friends and family. You are cordially invited:
