Fine Oak Things has been Milton’s premiere solid wood furniture store since 1989.  Jon Nameth has owned and operated the business since 2013, having purchased it from the founders who were retiring.  He is committed to the principles that Fine Oak Things was founded upon:  uncompromising quality and exceptional customer service.

Why did you purchase the business?

The first thing that attracted me to Fine Oak Things was the products.  As most of our customers can attest, as soon as you enter the showroom it is evident that there is a different level of craftsmanship in each solid wood piece.  Secondly, the business had a long list of satisfied customers and long track record of success through each stage of the economic cycle.  Finally, I had an opportunity to evolve the online presence of Fine Oak Things by making use of social media and by making our website more user friendly.  When put together, the quality products, long track record, and growing the online presence made Fine Oak Things an extremely attractive opportunity.

What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?

Being an entrepreneur is the most empowered that you can be.  It has forced me to wear many different hats and continually learn about different areas outside my comfort zone.  I am able to try different things and learn what works and what doesn’t.  Ultimately everything needs to be done with my customers in mind.  Communicating with customers is the best way to learn what you are doing well and what needs to improve.  Implementing solutions to their suggestions and seeing the smiles on their faces when we deliver what they want is the best feeling any business owner can have.

One major takeaway for anyone considering starting a business or becoming a business owner is that mistakes are necessary in order to evolve.  Too few mistakes and you are likely being overly cautious and missing out on opportunities.  Too many mistakes and you are not learning from past experiences and implementing corrective solutions.  You must always strive for perfection, but need to realize that it is unattainable.

What are 5 unique things about your business?

  1. All of our solid wood furniture can be custom sized, styled and stained to fit your home or business.  Our furniture is made specifically for each customer and no two pieces are the same.
  2. Recycled Patio, Fine Oak Things’ exclusive line of luxury patio furniture is made from recycled plastic.  Beautiful colours, environmentally friendly, and a 50-year warranty make Recycled Patio the last set of outdoor furniture that you will ever need to buy.
  3. Fine Oak Things views its suppliers as partners and forms longstanding relationships with them to ensure quality and stability.  We also keep records for each customer so that we can help you match a new piece to a previous purchase when you return.
  4. The majority of Fine Oak Things suppliers are local craftsmen from Ontario.  Those that aren’t are Amish from the United States that have been suppliers to Fine Oak Things for years.
  5. Fine Oak Things revolves around its customers.  We don’t want to guess what products would meet your needs and then display them to you in our showroom.  Instead, we want to understand your needs and then customize and deliver you quality products that solve your problems.
