In our second momstown Milton Baby Basics Program sponsored by Walmart, we focused on all things Safety. In our discussion, our mamas expressed some of their concerns for their little ones and offered each other advice and tips to help ease our worries. We then had the opportunity to review some great products on the market to help keep our children safe from harms way.
Cabinet latches – These are designed to lock cupboards in a way that is easy for adults to unlock but difficult for children. There are a few to choose from:
Baby Monitors – Baby monitors offer us peace of mind from the worry of SIDS. Being able to hear, and maybe even see, our children makes us feel a little better leaving them in their cribs by themself. We know to have baby sleep on their back, on a flat surface to prevent SIDS but we still worry. There are some really great monitors on the market from sound, video to sensors. The OMA by Levana is an inovative new monitor that clips to your babies diaper and monitors their breathing. If baby stops breathing an alarm will sound alerting you of an issue. This mama was super excited to win the monitor to take home!
Safety Gates – We were very surprised to learn in our discussion that 20,000 children visit the hospital yearly due to incorrect installation or improper use of safety gates. It is very important to choose a gate that is made for the area that you are trying to secure.
There are 3 different options to choose from:
Fire Safety – It is important to have a fire safety plan whether you have children or not. In the event of a fire, you should have a route that is considered to be the safest to exit the home. A few products that should be on your next shopping list if you don't already have one are a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. You should have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen in case of a grease fire and a fire blanket is great to keep in your bedrooms to protect you and your family members as you take your fire route out of the home.
Door Stoppers – These little things are found in all homes and are an unknown choking hazard. The standard door stoppers are a spring with a little knob at the end that can be removed. When a child is playing with it because of the fun sound it makes, there is a possibility of the knob coming loose and them putting it in their mouth. There are stoppers available that are solid plastic pieces that will not come apart and children will lose interest in playing with them.
Cord Cleats – A big concern in homes with blinds is strangulation. A cord cleat will keep cords out of reach of little hands. Be sure to install it at least 4 feet from the floor and away from cribs.
Door Knob Locks – Another concern is when our tots are big enough to reach door handles and can now let themselves out of rooms. There are great locks to put on door knobs or lever handles to help keep kids from getting into rooms they shouldn't be in. There is a product called the Door Guardian which gets installed on the front door at the top where an adult can reach it but children can not. This offers peace of mind to parents and is extra security against burglars.
Sun safety – When in the car an often complaint from our little ones is how hot it can get with the sun shining on them. The Stretch to Fit Sunshade by Brica will help keep them comfortable and will stretch to work on any size car window. Our mamas were lucky to recieve a sunshade as part of their loot bag!
Electrical outlets – Keeping your plugs covered are very important! Our little ones are very curious and enjoy putting items in any hole they find! There are some great outlet covers that will suit all your needs!
Falling furniture – Have a bookcase or TV that is not screwed into the wall? Worried about your tot climbing them and getting toppled over with the appliance on top of them? There is a great strap that secures to the wall and your TV or bookcase that will help keep that from happening!
Did you know that same major appliances (fridges, washers, dryers and dishwashers) now come with a built in child safety feature? Look for the lock symbol and the number to indicate how long to activate it.
There are many more great products available to help keep your children safe. Consulting a professional baby proofer like Bullseye Child Safety will help you make informed decisions and put your mind at ease for the safety of your child.
Many products are available from walmart.ca and can be ordered online with free shipping!
